Set Goals like in Sports
To get better results in your business and life, you want to set tangible goals.
In football there are 3 goals for the season.
Then there’s preparation each week.
Each week you have a game-plan that you draw up, then you implement that game-plan.
In football, each team generally creates 3 goals before the season starts.
Goal 1: Beat your division opponents. Go 6-0 in your division games. This assures you best chance to get in to the playoffs. This is a tangible in-season goal with a definitive number.
Goal 2:Win the Division. Every team’s goal is to win the division. This solidifies a playoff spot. You have to be in the playoffs to get a playoff spot. This is a tangible end-of-season goal with a clear direction of what needs to happen.
Goal 3: Win the Super Bowl. This is a tangible end of the year goal. This is the big goal at the end of the year that is difficult but achievable. There is a game being played and two teams have to appear in it. It generally won’t happen if you don’t have a good work ethic during the season. The thing though is that you don’t necessarily need to hit Goal 1 or Goal 2 to get Goal 3.
It is important to set definitive goals like this that are short term, intermediate term, and long term within a season.
You also want to break these down into 3 tangible, feasible things that are not too lofty.
Then, every week they know who their opponent is and they game plan for that team because the overarching goal is to win every week. But that is an unrealistic goal. If your goal is win every week, you’re setting yourself up for failure and lower self-esteem if you lose 1 game.
You want to create 3 tangible easy goals like the above that are achievable and not too lofty.
You also want to create a season in business.
You don’t want to create goals that are 5 or 10 years out.
That is such a long time with so many variables. The reality is many businesses are out of business before that mark.
You want something relatively short where once you achieve the goal take a vacation or break.
You don’t need an off-season like football for 5 months. But you want a week vacation or something exciting where you recharge the batteries before creating the next goal
You don’t want to create lofty goals that are the equivalent of what should be many many seasons before you take a break or pat yourself on the back.
