Social Media Advertising, Testing, and Results
Results have a waiting period and typically you need to work down the funnel. It’s extremely tough to throw up a single image and get purchases immediately. Right now we are in the audience development phase, seeing where the conversion audiences exist.
From there we need to do the retargeting, sometimes multiple times, and then we will find the people who show real interest in purchasing.
Having multiple assets to send out will be extremely helpful, especially the video material I sent you, then we can gauge interest by how long they watched the video and retarget those customers, and build audiences of those customers.
Let’s say you sell customizable handbags. You want to target people who have similar interests to other luggage brands that do well and other brands the customers of that brand buy that are similar.
An opportunity would also be advertising on specific keywords on a platform like Google AdWords that trigger buying behaviors such as
“Customizable handbags” “customize a handbag” “buy a custom handbag” “place my initials on my handbag”
You don’t know if this will work right away. All you can do is do research.
How many times is that keyword searched and what is the competition like.
Then, you have a realistic approach to what numbers you are working with. Then, it’s about how good your message is to convert. The conversion rate will depend on how good your landing page is, and the buying process for this item. If people aren’t buying it’s one of two things.
Either your landing page isn’t high quality in terms of price/offer/message/etc. or the industry has poor buying power, where customers for this keyword/service aren’t quality buyers.
Something else that is more abstract is social media and using influencers. The only research you can do is understanding the influencer’s audience and if they have converted similar products. If they have had results previously with a similar product or service, then you know their audience is solid.
But you can’t be too rash to make a decision of whether marketing is working or not.
You have to generally test with 5x of the amount of your product or service price, to even see if it is working and bringing in sales.
1x is generally not enough.
Meaning everyone wants to put $1 in and make $2.
Does it happen right away?
Can it happen with something that produced 1 sale off a 5x spend meaning you put $5 in and $1 came back, yes.
But it takes time to understand what was not convering. Was it the image, the message, the keyword, the landing page.
The goal is to get 1 sale and then improve.
Obviously you want 1 sale to come a whole lot quicker than a 5x spend.
But what I am saying is you need to give whatever advertising room to breathe.
because if you just chalk something up as not working if it doesn’t perform better than a 1x spend, you will negate 9 out of 10 ad opportunities that actually do work.
If you don’t have ads, you don’t have leads, and you don’t have sales.
You want to be extremely sharp to cut loose on bad ads, but you need to give proper testing out of the gate.
Do research before, understand the conversion rates when you stick to something, and then commit to it every month.
